Dude, read the info when you open its inventory. It says, turns poop and thatch ....
Add thatch (50 at least).

i have 100 thatch and lots of dung not working for me? how long does it take
Takes a few hours. Throw in poop and thatch, then just ignore it for a few hours.

(I am guessing, and don't actually know) - I think it has something to do with the decay time on the poop. It multiplies the decay time be a few hundred, so keep the poop in chest until just before it decays, then throw it all in the compost bin? Same kind of thing as meat turning into rotten meat.

It take like one hour to turn into fertilizer
50 thatch, 3 medium dino turds, in that order. Doesn't take long and it's definitely worth it. Small plot gets like 54,000 fertilizer from one bag.
